Genetic counselling has an important place in all genetic screening and testing.

It allows individuals to become acquainted with what is at stake and to evaluate the implications and repercussions of testing, for themselves, their future descendants or children, and also their relatives.

In order to facilitate the decision-making process and with a view to obtaining informed consent, it is a legal obligation to respect individuals' freedom of choice.

This is particularly important in the case of oncogenetic testing in general and all the more so in the case of presymptomatic and prenatal testing.

The process consists in obtaining a family tree going back three or four generations, a medical assessment, genetic and genealogical risk identification and in making recommendations as regards the benefits of testing to clarify the situation and determine the personalised management of consultants.
